The HCCC Men's basketball team opened up the spring semester portion of their schedule with an 85-61 victory over Cayuga Community College in Auburn Sunday afternoon. The Generals were paced by Akeem Ellis with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kevin Kucel contributed 17 points including 8-9 from the foul line. Rhamel Williams had 16 points. The team recorded a season high 29 assists on 34 baskets made.
The victory runs the Generals record to 11-4. They face Schenectady County Community College at the Washington Avenue Armory Tuesday evening at 7:00 in a Mountain Valley Conference rematch.

November/December Green & Gold Club Athletes
Herkimer County Community College recently selected four student-athletes for the College’s Green and Gold Club for the months of November and December.

Joeski Williams (Bronx, NY) helped lead the men's soccer team to a national championship in November. For his play he was selected as the MVP of the NJCAA National Final Four Tournament. "Joeski had two unbelievable games in the national semi-final and final. His performance in the central midfield both offensively and defensively was amazing," said coach Pepe Aragon.

Sergey Capozzelli (Peekskill, NY) currently holds seven school records in swimming: 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley. Swimming and diving coach Vicki Brown said “Sergey has an incredible work ethic. He completes every practice set and race with determination and focus and is an extremely talented athlete. He swims a personal best time in almost every race.” In a two-week span, Sergey dropped over nine seconds in the 200 butterfly. “The butterfly is one of the more difficult strokes, but Sergey swims it with ease and improves each and every time he races. He has incredible technique, and is a well-rounded individual who is highly respected by his teammates.”

Samantha Fox (Hartwick, NY), a 6’3” freshman center, led the women’s basketball team in the first month of her young career with 13.2 points per game, 13.5 rebounds per game, and 5.5 blocked shots per game. Fox currently leads the nation in blocked shots per game and is third in rebounding. “Sam is a difference maker in the paint, and she is quickly becoming one of the top post players in the nation,” said women’s basketball coach John Campagna.

Nina Stoecke (Newport, NY), dropped six seconds off her 100 yard backstroke and nine seconds off her 200 yard backstroke time. She currently holds five school records: 50 yard freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, and the 400 medley relay, and is only a few seconds off of both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke records. “Nina came into the swim program as a sprint freestyler, and with a lot of hard work, dedication and a will to improve and learn, she is now our strongest backstroker,” said Coach Vicki Brown. Stoecke recently broke one of the longer standing school records in the 50 yard freestyle. “Nina is incredibly determined to do well this season. She has a drive like nothing I’ve ever seen. It’s truly a pleasure to work with an athlete who loves the sport and wishes to improve in any way possible.”

Track and Field Recognized for 2008 National Championship

The Board of Trustees of Herkimer County Community College recently extended its congratulations and commendation to the 2008 Women’s Track & Field coaches and players for winning a national championship title. Head coach Sharon Howell was also recognized for being named Coach of the 2008 NJCAA National Championship Meet. Coaches and players included Sharon Howell, Head Coach; Julie DelMedico, Assistant Coach; Amanda Davey; Krysta Estey; Grace Hall; Bethany Jennings; Sarah Lazarus; Theresa Lazarus; Amanda Link and Chantal Salamone. The HCCC men's basketball team concluded the fall portion of their schedule with an 89-85 victory over conference rival SUNY Delhi in Herkimer. Rhamel Williams had an outstanding game scoring 28 points to go along with his eight steals.
Jimmy Pitts contributed 20 points, including three thunderous dunks and contributed 10 rebounds. Freshman reserve guard Josh Ramirez brought Herkimer back from an early 15 point deficit by scoring all eight of his points in a three minute span late in the second half.
The victory runs the Generals overall record to 10-4, 4-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference. They are currently ranked third in Region III.
The men return to action after the holidays on January 4 at Cayuga Community College at 3:00 p.m.

Herkimer County Community College men's basketball player Jimmy Pitts (Auburn High School/Syracuse, NY) was named NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Player of the Week for contests held November 17-23. A 6'7" forward, Pitts led the Generals to four wins during the week with 81 points, 52 rebounds and 18 shots blocked. He shot 61.3 percent from the field and had five assists and five steals on the week.

Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Lee Martins (Bridgeport, CT) was named 2008 Region III Player of the Year. Martins finished second in the country for points with 24 goals and 16 assists.
Seven HCCC players were named to the all-Region III team, five to the first and two to the second. Seniors Lee Martins, Harry Appiah (Pawtucket, RI), and Sean Trinidad (White Plains, NY) were named to the first team with freshman Demetrius Lawrence (Reading, England) and James Taber (Liverpool, NY). Senior Rob Dickinson (Endicott, NY) and freshman Kariym Balthazar (Brooklyn, NY) were named to the second team.
"All seven played a big part in leading Herkimer to the programs seventh national championship," said men's soccer coach Pepe Aragon.

The men's basketball team raced out to a 60-26 halftime lead and cruised to a 78-52 victory over Corning Community College at home on Sunday afternoon. Jimmy Pitts again lead the way for the Generals with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Akeem Ellis chipped in with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Kevin Kucel had 16 points and six assists. The Generals were 11 for 18 from three point range lead by Kucel's 4 for 5 shooting. The defense held 6'8" preseason All-American Rodney Bartholomew to a season low six points.
The victory extends the men's winning streak to four games. They are 8-2 overall, 7-2 in Region III and 3-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference. They travel to Finger Lakes Community College Tuesday evening concluding a 14 day, seven game stretch before the Thanksgiving break.

The Generals improved to 5-3 with a solid win over Corning Community College 72-49. Samantha Fox tallied 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Elizabeth King scored 16 points and Alissa Carcone played excellent defense to lead Herkimer.

Herkimer won for the first time at home this year defeating North Country Community College 70-40. The Generals were led by Samantha Fox scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Shavonne Simmons had another solid game with 13 points.

The men's basketball team continued their winning ways with a come from behind victory against a tough North Country Community College squad at home Saturday afternoon 77-76. Rhamel Williams hit a clutch free throw with 1.6 seconds remaining to get the victory. Kevin Kucel and Josh Ramirez hit consecutive three point baskets to close a nine point gap down to three with four minutes remaining in the contest. Kucel had 16 points and 5 assists for the Generals. Akeem Ellis had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Jimmy Pitts had a game high 21 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double double in a row.
The victory brings the men's record to 7-2, 6-2 in Region III and 3-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference.

The HCCC men's basketball team overcame a 33-31 halftime deficit with a 25-8 late game run to defeat the Broome Community College Hornets 64-54 at Dick Baldwin Gymnasium in Binghamton Thursday.
Jimmy Pitts had another outstanding game with 20 points,13 rebounds and 6 blocks. Akeem Ellis again contributed with eight points and a game high 15 rebounds. Rhamel Williams and Reggie Williams both chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds and Kevin Kucel dished out five assists. Freshman reserve Josh Ramirez hit a clutch 3 pointer to give the Generals the lead for good with five minutes left in the game.
The victory brings the General's overall record to 6-2, 5-2 in Region III. They face North Country Community College at home on Saturday and Corning Community College at home on Sunday. Both games begin at 3:00 p.m.

Herkimer Athletes Named To Green And Gold Club
Two Herkimer County Community College student-athletes were selected for the College’s Green and Gold Club for the month of October.
Katie Ozog, a senior from Ilion, NY, has been the lead runner for the women’s cross country team throughout the 2008 season. Ozog has run competitive times all season, peaking this month with a sub eight minute mile pace over a 3.1 mile course. "Katie’s work ethic, competitive drive and school pride along with her athletic abilities make her an ideal candidate for the Green and Gold Club," said cross country coach Julie Delmedico.
Kariym Balthazar, a freshman from Brooklyn, NY, has been recognized for his outstanding performance on the men’s soccer team. During the Region III playoffs, he had one assist in the quarter-final, one goal in the semi-final, and two goals in the championship game. “Kariym has come up huge for us in all of our big games. He has a tremendous work ethic,” said men's soccer coach Pepe Aragon.

Herkimer County Community College men's basketball coach Matt Lee, of Utica, earned his 100th career victory on Friday, November 7 in a 72-67 win over Adirondack Community College. Lee has served as head coach since 2003 and has three times led his teams to the Region III finals. The HCCC men's basketball team improved their record to 4-2 with a come from behind victory over Finger Lakes Community College 71-62. Jimmy Pitts had his best college game scoring 21 points and adding 14 rebounds. Senior captain Kevin Kucel contributed 14 points and added six assists and Akeem Ellis had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Reggie German nailed a clutch three pointer at the end of the first half that helped the Generals cut a first half deficit and take the half time lead 29-28.
The men travel to Binghamton Thursday night at 8:00 to face Broome Community College.

The Herkimer men's basketball team broke their first two game losing streak in over two years with a 77-48 victory over Cazenovia College. Akeem Ellis had his fourth double double of the season with a 16 point, 12 rebound effort. Jimmy Pitts added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Justin Poirier, coming back after an injury that sidelined him for the last two games, chipped in with 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting. Point guard Julian Bostick, in his first collegiate start, had six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
The victory brings the Generals overall record to 4-2, 3-2 in Region III. They host rival Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m.

On Saturday, November 15, 2008 the General’s hosted their first home meet of the season. The team swam to 8 first place finishes, 4 more school records and 17 national qualifying cut times.
Scott Ledwith once again shattered another school record in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 12:31.81, almost 2 minutes off the previous record. He then went on to break his own school record in the 500 yard freestyle, which he had previously set last weekend, with a time of 6:00.15. Bayla Akulin broke the 50 yard freestyle record with a time of 28.15 and Sergey Capozzelli went on break his own record, previously set last weekend, in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.04.
Nina Stoecke and Kelcy Newman both swam personal bests in the 100 yard backstroke (1:22.20) and 200 yard freestyle (2:24.28), respectfully. Christian Torgersen also swam a personal best in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 58.44. Samantha Stockton swam to two personal best times in the 50 yard freestyle (30.70) and 100 yard freestyle (1:09.09).
The team travels to SUNY Potsdam on Friday, 11/22 for the North Country Invitational.

Herkimer won their third game in a row in overtime against a good Jefferson team 60-57. Samantha Fox (Cooperstown) led the Generals recording her first triple double with 14 points, 23 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Freshman teammate Jennifer Lighthall (Holland Patent) added 12 points and 5 assists. Hannah Gates had a solid performance with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Men's Soccer are National Champions!
 Dallas, TX the Herkimer Men's Soccer team won the NJCAA Division III National Championship. They defeated Triton College by a score of 2-1. Trition scored first early in the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Generals fought back and tied the game at 1-1 when Joeski Williams put the ball in the net with the assist from Corey Phillips late in the second half. Then with 2:30 remaining in regulation Corey Phillips scored the game winning goal for Herkimer with the assist from Lee Martins. This is the 7th National Championship for the Men's Soccer program at Herkimer and 4th for Head Coach Pepe Aragon.
Joeski Williams was named MVP of the Tournament.
The team is scheduled to return to Herkimer College Monday at approximately 8:00 p.m.
Coach Aragon Inducted to Soccer Hall of Fame
Men’s soccer coach Pepe Aragon was inducted, as a player, into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Soccer Hall of Fame on Friday, November 7 at the NJCAA Division III National Soccer Final Four banquet in Richland, Texas.
As a student athlete at Herkimer, Aragon was a two time all-American (1989 & 1990) and led his team to a national third place finish in his senior year.
Aragon received an athletic scholarship to NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University where he was a two-time All- Mid-American Conference selection and helped lead the Falcons to their first NCAA tournament appearance in more than 20 years. After graduating from Bowling Green, he played one season for the Canton Invaders of the National Professional Soccer League. He then signed a contract with the Cleveland Caps of the United States Inter-Regional Soccer League (U.S.I.S.L.) before accepting the head coaching position at HCCC in 1998. In 2000, Aragon was named to the NJCAA All-Century Team along with former U.S. National Team coach Bruce Arena and MLS goal keeper Zach Thorton.
HCCC Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher said, “I cannot think of a better selection for the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame. Pepe has always conducted himself in a first class manner and what he has done for the sport of soccer is immeasurable. We are very fortunate to have him as our soccer coach at HCCC.”

The Herkimer Men's soccer team took one step closer to becoming the NJCAA Division III National Champions. The Herkimer Generals defeated County College of Morris (NJ) 2-1 in overtime. CC Morris scored first to take a 1-0 lead. Herkimer got on the board in the second half as Harry Appiah scored Herkimer's goal with the assist from Lee Martins to tie the game at 1-1. Herkimer then scored the winning goal 8:00 minutes into the first 10 minute overtime to win 2-1. Lee Martins scored the game winning goal with the assist from Cedric Bouemboue. The Herkimer Generals Men's Soccer team will play against Triton College (Ill) for the NJCAA Division III Men's National Soccer Championship tomorrow beginning at 1:30 pm (CST), 2:30 pm (EST).

The Generals opened up the Mountain Valley Conference portion of their schedule with a 70-66 come from behind victory last night in the HCCC varsity gym. Behind by seven with six minutes left in the game, the team went on a 13-0 run sparked by a clutch 3-point field goal by Reggie German to put them ahead for good.
The Generals were led by Steve Campbell’s 15 points and Kevin Kucel’s 13 points and six assists. Shawn Simmons was the spark in the first half coming off to the bench to hit three 3-pointers in a two minute time frame. Simmons finished with 11 points. Akeem Ellis added nine points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Herkimer [2-0] continues their conference schedule on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Adirondack Community College in Glens Falls.

The Herkimer County Community College men’s soccer team (18-3) won the Region III championship against Alfred State 5-0 for their 19th consecutive regional championship and 20th title in 21 years. Defenseman Demetrius Lawrence, forward Balthazar, and midfielder Sean Trinidad were named to the All-Tournament team. Lee Martins was named Tournament MVP and Region III Player of the Year. The Generals will travel to Richland, Texas to compete in the NJCAA Division III national championship tournament next weekend.

The Region III Men's Soccer Quarterfinal game originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 28 has been rescheduled due to weather. Herkimer County Community College (#1) will face Finger Lakes Community College (#8) at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 30 at Wehrum Stadium. The Region III final four tournament will take place this weekend at Wehrum Stadium.

Men's Soccer Player Named Region III Male Athlete of the Week
Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Lee Martins was named NJCAA Region III Male Athlete of the Week.
A forward from Bridgeport, CT, Martins tallied 17 points over three games last week. He scored two goals against #8 nationally ranked Mohawk Valley Community College in a 5-1 win and had one goal and one assist in a 3-1 win over #19 Union County College. He currently leads the team in scoring with 40 points (17 goals and 8 assists). He is ranked fifth nationally in total points.
Head soccer coach Pepe Aragon said, "Lee is a tremendous finisher with exceptional speed."
September Green & Gold Club Athletes
Two Herkimer County Community College student-athletes were selected for the College's Green and Gold Club for the month of September.
 Men's soccer team captain Lee Martins, a freshman from Bridgeport, Connecticut, has been selected for scoring 14 goals and 7 assists in the month of September. He has scored in eight of 12 games, including the first four goals of the Generals' 5-0 win over North Country Community College. Head soccer coach Pepe Aragon said, "Lee is a tremendous finisher with exceptional speed." Lee has also recently been named Region III Male Athlete of the Week.
Volleyball player Tiffany Conroy, of Wampsville, has also been chosen for the Green and Gold Club for her outstanding performance on the court and academic achievements. A freshman defensive specialist, Conroy is leading her team with 113 digs, 57 assists, 8 aces and 4 kills. Coach Kristy Lynch said, "Tiffany's excellent demeanor on and off the court is an example to all. She displays confidence and focus on the court and is continually bettering those around her."

HCCC Athletic Director Donald Dutcher named National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Athletic Director of the Year
Herkimer County Community College Athletic Director Donald Dutcher has been named National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Athletic Director
of the Year. Dutcher was recognized for his commitment to Region III athletics at the fall meeting of the Region III Athletic Directors in Cooperstown, NY.
Dutcher serves on several regional committees and has hosted several national and regional athletic events at HCCC.
Dutcher was appointed athletic director at HCCC in 2004. Under his leadership, Herkimer has won eight national and 10 regional championships, and six
teams have been named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year. Herkimer placed second nationally among non-scholarship Division III community college athletic programs
in the NATYCAA Cup Award in 2008, and earned third place in 2006 and 2007. As a member of the Mountain Valley Conference, Herkimer also finished third in the
Region III Directors Cup in 2007-2008. Both awards are given annually to recognize overall athletic program excellence at the national and regional levels.
HCCC President Ann Marie Murray said “This award is a testament to Don’s hard work and commitment to his profession. He is a strong leader and is committed
to the success of students on the field and in the classroom.”
Dutcher serves as president of the Mountain Valley Conference and chair of the Region III softball committee. He is a member of the Region III standards
and ethics, women's basketball, women's soccer, swimming, track and field, and men's lacrosse committees. He also chairs the Herkimer County Community College
Intercollegiate Athletic Council. He is currently participating in the Leadership Mohawk Valley program.
Dutcher previously was a teacher, coach and athletic director at Poland Central School. Prior to that, he taught at Herkimer High School and coached men's and
women's soccer, basketball, track and tennis. He was named Mohawk Valley Coach of the Year in 2004 for leading Poland Central's basketball team to the State Final Four.
In 2003, he was inducted into the SUNYIT Wildcat Hall of Fame.
A 1990 graduate of Herkimer County Community College, Dutcher was the all-time leading scorer for the HCCC men's soccer team, an honor which he held for six years.
He was a member of the first-ever team to make the national tournament, and received All-Region honors both years. He earned bachelor's degrees from SUNYIT, where he was
also the all-time leading scorer for the soccer team, and SUC at Oswego. He also holds a master's degree and Certificate of Advanced Study from SUC at Cortland. A native of
Poland, NY, Dutcher is a 1988 graduate of Poland Central School. He and his family reside in Deerfield.

Herkimer Men’s Soccer Players Named NJCAA Division III Players of the Week
Herkimer County Community College forward Kariym Balthazar was named NJCAA Men's Division III Soccer Player of the Week and goalie Daniel Johnson is the NJCAA Men's Division III Soccer Goalie of the Week.
Balthazar, of Brooklyn, N.Y., tallied 13 points last week with 5 goals and 3 assists. In the Generals’ 5-1 victory over Broome Community College, he recorded the first three goals on five shots as well as two goals and an assist in their in 11-0 win over Clinton and the first two assists in their 6-0 win over Adirondack.
Johnson, of Devonshire, Bermuda, posted two shutouts over Broome (5-0) and Clinton Community College (11-0). He allowed one goal in the Generals’ 5-1 victory. He is 6-3 overall on the year.

Women's Cross Country Teams Achieve National Ranking for Second Straight Week
For the second week the women's cross country team has received National recognition. After a challenging weekend at Oswego, against all four year competition, the girls have been ranked 7th in the Nation jumping 3 spots since last week. "If we can withstand injury, I think we'll continue to improve. You're only as good as your competition that's why we chose to run against the bigger schools" coach DelMedico said.

Men's & Women's Cross Country Teams Achieve National Ranking
Herkimer County Community College's men's and women's cross country teams achieved a national ranking after their season opener. After running against Division I Syracuse University and Colgate along with top Region III competitors Mohawk Valley Community College and SUNY Delhi, both the men's and women's teams have been polled tenth in the nation.
The men's team is led by freshman Ian Sanchez, Ossining, NY and has a strong group of first year runners including: Jake Raner, Mexico NY, Jose Maldonado, Ilion NY, Brian Majka, New York Mills NY, and Eric Green, Millerton NY. Second year runners include Nick Bloom, Chittenango NY, Glen Kelly, Queens NY, and Nick DeLango, Pawling NY. Head coach Julie DelMedico said "the chemistry between these runners is great and really seems to help on longer, more difficult practices as well as during meets. I think that by the end of the year the split times will be really incredible."
The women are led by sophomores Kathleen Ozog, Ilion NY and Melissa Cleeton, Liverpool NY, Amanda Link, North Patchogue NY, Tammy Carney, Herkimer, and freshman Deena Kertesz, Pine Bush, NY. "The women are still getting into the swing of things after a rocky start, so to be ranked this early in the season is great. I can't wait to see where we stand once we really utilize our potential," said DelMedico.
The team's next meet takes place Saturday, September 13 at the Oswego Invitational.

Herkimer baseball received a big commitment from former LaSalle standout Amar Lewis. Lewis who has started at Class AA LaSalle since 8th grade, played for legendary coach George Rogers and the South Troy Dodgers, and competed at the 2007 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars. "We have been after Amar for over a year now and were thrilled to hear his commitment to us for next year. We realize the caliber of player he is and will work hard to move him on to his goal of playing Division I baseball. He is the big bat we wanted for the middle of our lineup.” Stated Head Coach Jason Rathbun. Amar makes it the seventh All State player to commit to the Generals for the 2008-09 season.

19 Recruits Join Herkimer Baseball for 2008-09 Season; High School All State Teams Released

Herkimer baseball will begin the fall season with a mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday September 3, 2008 at 7:00 pm in the Varsity Gym. All players plan on trying out for baseball are encouraged to attend. In order to workout you must have all paper work turned into the school nurse to include a sports physical within the last year. Herkimer has announced their recruiting class for the 2008-09 season which includes 14 recruited freshman players along with 5 students transferring from previous colleges.
New York State recently named the All State team for the 2008 high school baseball season. Herkimer baseball recruits were well represented in the selections:
- Al Ferenti, Whitesboro, was named to the Class A first team as a shortstop
- George Hajjar, Whitesboro, was named to the Class A fourth team as an outfielder
- Kris Barone, Gloversville, was named to the Class A fifth team as a pitcher
- Paul Raymond, Phoenix, was named to the Class B third team as a pitcher
- Matt Layman, Edmenston, was named to the Class D second team as a pitcher
- Brett Hauber, Deposit, was named to the Class D third team as a utility player
"It is great to see these athletes finish their high school baseball careers on a high note. We are excited to bring them into Herkimer and continue their process in becoming a collegiate student athlete," stated Head Coach Jason Rathbun.

HCCC alum and former soccer player Ryan Pierce is in his second year with the Harrisburg City Islanders. Pierce helped lead Herkimer to a 33-4-2 record and a pair of NJCAA Region III Championships. He was recognized as an NJCAA 1st team All-American and Region III Player of the Year in 2003. After leaving Herkimer, Pierce started 43 straight games at Binghamton University.

Herkimer CCC Baseball recently was named one of the Academic Teams of the Year with a team GPA of 3.02. Herkimer finished 23rd out of 26 teams that qualified for the honor. The list is made up of Division I, II, and III schools including scholarship schools along with non-scholarships schools. Herkimer baseball was the only Junior College in New York state and the only DIII school to receive this honor. This marks the second time in the last three years Herkimer has received this award. Dolgeville native Matt Gonyea, pictured above, led the team in GPA this past season.

Former General Signs Professional Baseball Contract
Everett Saul missed his opportunity in this past MLB draft, but now he is chasing his goal another way, by proving he belongs.
Saul a 6’ 5 right-handed pitcher signed a professional contract with the Florence Freedom in Florence, Kentucky. After 5
games started so far this season, Saul stands at 4-1 and has been a key part in stabilizing the Freedom’s rotation. Saul
who has been recorded at 94 mph is racking up the strikeouts for the Freedom. Saul pitched for the Generals in 2004 and
2005, still stands tied for second in the record books when he compiled 6 wins his senior season. Saul also stands first
in all time strikeouts at the college with 122 in two seasons. Saul is from Sullivan, NY and continued his college career
at Western Missouri State University on a baseball scholarship.

HCCC Student Athletes Earn 2008 Academic All-Region Awards
Twelve Herkimer County Community College student athletes recently received the 2008 Academic All-Region award. This honor is given by NJCAA Region III to athletes who have earned at least 45 credit hours and a grade point average of 3.5 or better.

Women's Bowling and Swimming Teams Named National Academic Teams of the Year
Two Herkimer County Community College athletic teams earned the distinction of being named National Academic Team of the Year for 2007-08. The women's swim team had an average GPA of 3.79, and the women's bowling team had an average GPA of 3.28.
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) awards this honor annually to teams with an average cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Frankfort Standout Matt Rotundo Commits to Herkimer Baseball
Frankfort High School and Adrean Post standout Matt Rotundo has signed a letter of intent to attend
Herkimer County Community College next season. "Matt has the drive and desire to win and compete at a high level.
I think he will push other players to give their best effort everyday, a real competitor on the field,” stated Head Coach
Jason Rathbun. Matt is a strong middle infielder who hit .530 as a junior and hit .515 as a senior this past season.
HCCC Receives National Recognition for Athletic Excellence

Herkimer County Community College received the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup award for its second place national finish among non-scholarship Division III community college athletic programs in 2007-2008. The NATYCAA Cup awards are given annually to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges at the national level. This is the third consecutive year that Herkimer has won a NATYCAA Cup, and the first time in college history to finish second.
The College of DuPage (IL) came in first place and Gloucester County College (NJ) came in third. Herkimer received the top-ranking among scholarship and non-scholarship community college athletic programs in New York State. The Generals earned 143 points for national placements in women’s and men’s cross country, women’s and men’s bowling, women’s and men’s swimming, women’s and men’s track and field, women’s and men’s lacrosse and men’s soccer.
HCCC Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher received the award at the national convention in Dallas Texas. "We are very proud of this ranking. It’s a testament to a long history of hard work on the part of the entire athletic department staff and student athletes, together with the support of our faculty and the College administration. It is a total team effort,” said Dutcher.
NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators with membership open to all two-year colleges in the nation.

Freshman Ty Folli Named NJCAA Baseball All American
Ty Folli (Union Endicott, NY) was named second team All American by the NJCAA this week. Folli who finished third in voting for Region III Player of the Year led the Generals this past season in batting average with a .412 mark. Folli also added 11 doubles, 2 homeruns, and 36 runs batted in. Folli who just completed his freshman season will lead a talented group of sophomores next year.

Three Receive Scholar Athlete Awards
Three Herkimer County Community College students received the 2007-08 SUNY Chancellor's Scholar Athlete Award, which recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Recipients of this year's award include 76 student athletes from 27 SUNY campuses for participation in 25 different sports. Collectively, these student athletes have posted an average GPA of 3.62. Former HCCC Lacrosse Player Named ECC Player of the Year
Former Herkimer County Community College Lacrosse player Eddie Ege of Adelphi University and Rockville Centre, New York has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year, headlining the 2008 ECC All Conference Awards as voted by the conference coaches.
Ege led the Panthers with 22 goals and 52 assists for 74 points over 12 games including an 8-29-37 mark in ECC play. Ege also finished as the ECC leader in points per game (6.17) and assists per game (4.33) average.

Herkimer Baseball Advances to Regional Final Four for Fourth Straight Season

The #3 seed in the Region III baseball tournament Herkimer CCC hosted #6 Jamestown CC in the Tuesday sub-regional game. Herkimer was 3-0 under Coach Rathbun entering this Tuesday elimination nine inning game. Coach Rathbun's first regional playoff win in 2005 came as the #6 seed against Jamestown who was the #3 coming off a World Series appearance in 2004. Herkimer jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first innings with the first run crossing the plate on a Ty Folli single. Jamestown would score 2 in the second and would tie the game on a 2 run homerun by Nat Barone in the fourth. Herkimer answered in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single by Nick Testa to make it 5-4. Jamestown tied the game in the fifth inning with a safety squeeze bunt to tie it at 5. Herkimer would answer again in the bottom of the inning scoring a run and taking a 6-5 lead. Herkimer would then add 2 runs in the sixth and seventh innings and hold on to the 10-7 victory. #3 Herkimer now will play #2 Hudson Valley CC in Batavia at Noon on Friday May 9th. The Regional Final Four is a double elimination tournament, with the winner advancing to the JUCO World Series in Tyler, Texas. Herkimer has won the Regional Championship the past two seasons.

Track and Field Wins Regional Championship
HCCC’s women’s track and field team won a Regional championship by an impressive score of 163.5 with MVCC in second with 115.

Amanda Davey in the 400 hurdles,
Chantal also received female Field Athlete of the meet.
The men took 7th place.

Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse In Regional Championship Game Today
The Herkimer Generals Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse team will both have a tough battle today as they play in the Regional Championship Games today. The Women will face the Monroe Tribunes beginning at Noon, while the Men will face rival Onondaga Lazers today beginning at 3:00 p.m. Both teams are looking to recapture the Regional Championships and head to their respective National Tournaments next weekend.

Former Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Ryan Pierce helped lead the Baltimore Blast to win the 2008 Major Indoor Soccer League Championship. The Blast defeated La Raza (Mexico) by a score of 14-11 Saturday to win their fourth championship in six years.
"Ryan has won two professional soccer championships in one year in two different leagues," said HCCC soccer coach Pepe Aragon. "What he has accomplished in his first year as a professional is amazing. Most players go through their entire career without ever winning a championship."
Pierce also helped lead the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer League Second Division to a title last summer.

signed a letter of intent to attend Flagler College on a Division II baseball scholarship next season. Hendricks is from Stuart, Florida and will attend Flagler which is located in St. Augustine, Florida. Hendricks is captain of this years

Retiring teacher Bruce Caskey threw out the first pitch in Thursday's doubleheader with Broome CC. Herkimer would get solid starts from Don Potter in game one who would improve to 4-1 on the season and Mitch Kierpiec in game two who moved to 5-1 as Herkimer swept a doubleheader from Broome CC. Herkimer was led at the plate by Ty Folli who was 3-6 with 6 runs batted in on the day. Ron Patterson was 4-7 on the afternoon, Notre Dame's Ben Brady was 3-3 in game two. Herkimer moves to 25-11 on the season and 23-9 in Region III. Herkimer ends the regular season Saturday at Hudson Valley. With a sweep the Generals would hold a piece of the Mountain Valley Conference championship. Seeding for the Region III tournament is Sunday night.

Scoring tonight for the Generals was Kevin Kemp with 5 goals and 2 assists. Billy Bushell had 2 goals and 3 assists, Dave Brock had 2 goals and 3 assists, Justin Hayes had 3 and 2 , Doug Hoch had 2 and 1, JP Finn had 2 and 3, and Drew Crutcher had 3 and 0. Zach Bates had 15 saves on the night in goal and Mike Cobb had 2 saves in the win for Herkimer.

Generals win 17 - 5 over Hudson Valley C.C.
The men's lacrosse team traveled to Hudson Valley CC Thursday afternoon to play their fourth game in six days. Coach Rich Dommer said, "Four games in six days is extremely exhausting, both mentally and physically, and our staff has been very impressed in how the guys did it." The Generals' overall record is now 12-1, and 10-0 in Region 3, which makes Herkimer the #1 seed in the regional playoffs. This is the first time in four years the Generals have gone into the tournament ranked #1.
The scoring for Herkimer came from multiple team members. Justin Hayes, Dave Brock and Jake Koch all came up big. Hayes came up with 1 goal and 7 assists. Brock ended up with 4 goals and 2 assists and Jake Koch tallied 5 goals on the day. JP Finn had 2 goals and 1 assist, Kevin Kemp had 1 goal and 3 assists, Doug Hoch had 2 goals and 1 assist and Drew Crutcher and Mike Cobb added single goal games. Also helping with the scoring was David Limbouris with an assist and Justin Gill with 2 assists.
Although this was a game littered with penalty flags, Herkimer played through the adversity and held strong under the leadership of both goalies Zach Bates and Danny Solazzo. Bates had 15 saves and Solazzo made 7 saves in the win. A breakout game was had by freshman Pat Sullivan on the defensive half. "Pat stepped it up scooping very timely loose balls and clearing the ball up to the offense. Patty really impressed us tonight and will be rewarded for this," said Dommer. "We have one more regular season game left and it's a big one for us. I know we are riding these last couple of wins out right now, and feeling good about them, but we have to get right back at it and focus on Saturday's game. All the hard work we put in this past fall and during early spring will pay off this late in the season if the boys can stay focused. This is a crucial time for us to come together and play our family style of lacrosse -- Herkimer Lacrosse."
Next up for Herkimer is Essex CC from Baltimore MD. The game will be played Saturday in HCCC's Wehrum Stadium at 3pm.

Former Herkimer County Community College men's soccer star Dwight Barnett, who plays for the Montreal Impact of the United Soccer League First Division, scored his first goal of his professional soccer career in the 83rd minute of a 2-1 victory over Miami FC. Barnett dribbled past the goalkeeper and chipped a defender for the game winning goal.
"Dwight is a tremendous forward with a gift for scoring," said Generals coach Pepe Aragon. A native of Jamaica, NY, Barnett graduated from HCCC in December 2005.
The Impact will travel to Atlanta on Friday, April 25 to take on the Silverbacks in a game that will be aired live on national television. Kick-off is at 8:00 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.

men's lacrosse and bowling teams has been awarded a Presidential
scholarship award for his hard work in the classroom and as a
student-athlete. "Justin's academic success is a testament to the time
and dedication Justin gives to his studies. We are all proud of Justin
for what he has accomplished in his career at Herkimer," said men's

Herkimer C.C. Men's Lacrosse Improves to 10 - 1 after 29 - 11 victory over Alfred State
Herkimer was off to an unusually slow start on Monday after traveling to Alfred State for a game originally scheduled for the March 29 but postponed due to inclement weather. "Our team has been faced with some adversity and we are overcoming it," said Coach Rich Dommer. "The first quarter was an adjusting period for the guys as we made some severe changes to our line ups Monday due to the fact that many of our student-athletes had classes. Academics and degree first - lacrosse second!"
Sparked by Kevin Kemp and Justin Hayes, Herkimer hit their stride early in the second quarter and never looked back. Kevin Kemp finished the day with 2 goals and 12 assists. Senior captain Justin Hayes had another great night finishing with 4 goals and 6 assists. "Kevin and Justin played very unselfish lacrosse tonight and spread the wealth to their teammates and this makes our staff very proud of them," said Dommer. Jake Koch and Chase Dominic both finished with 4 points on 3 goals and 1 assist. Doug Hoch, J.P. Finn and David Limbouris all added three a piece in the win. Justin Gill added 2 goals and 1 assist on the day. Tommy Szevin had 1 goal and 1 assist. Drew Crutcher, Brandon Phelps, Brendan Slepoy, Mike Cobb and Matt Daigle all added 1 goal apiece in the victory.
Face-offs were controlled by Tommy Steinberg, JP Finn, Tim Manoogian and Doug Hoch winning a combined 27 face-offs. In goal for the Generals was freshman keeper Danny Solazzo who had a solid performance with 23 saves and a much improved clearing game. The Generals stay in control of Region III as they remain the top ranked team with a record of 10- 1 overall and 8-0 in Region III competition.
The Generals have a busy week ahead with Broome at 7pm on Tuesday at home, Hudson Valley (away) on Thursday and Essex (Baltimore) at home at 3pm on Saturday.

In goal for Herkimer was Zach Bates playing only the first quarter and having 1 save. Finishing the game was Danny Solazzo who had 9 saves in the win.
The pace of the game was controlled by our face off men - Joey Lehner and Tommy Steinberg. Joey won 17 of 23 taken and Tommy won 6 of 8 taken.
The Generals are now 9 - 0 and currently ranked # 1 in the NJCAA. The Generals are home this Saturday at 1pm against Nassau C.C. who is currently ranked 3rd in the NJCAA.
Rathbun Notches 100th Victory
Herkimer County Community College Head Baseball Coach Jason Rathbun notched his 100th victory on Sunday April 13th. The milestone win came in the game 1 victory of a double-header versus Corning Community College.
During Rathbun's short, but impressive tenure at Herkimer, he has compiled on overall record of 101-37 (.731) in his fourth season at the helm. During his managerial reign, Herkimer has made 2 World Series appearances including a 3rd place finish in the national tournament last season. Herkimer baseball has also appeared in 3 Regional Final Fours, winning the regional championship the last two seasons. On top of all the on-the-field success Rathbun's teams have experienced, his team, along with individual players have earned numerous academic honors. The 2006 World Series Team was awarded National Academic All American Honors with a GPA over 3.0 for the sport of baseball.

Herkimer traveled to Corcoran High School to play Onondaga. Herkimer went in to the game ranked # 2 in the NJCAA while Onondaga was ranked # 1. It was a high tempo game, end to end, strong transition - race horse lacrosse. Herkimer came out on top because we played a complete game and we played it together. Herkimer now takes over as the # 1 ranked team in the country and advances to 8 - 0. The final score was 24 - 19.
Freshman Doug Hoch from Lakeland, NY finished with 8 goals. Justin Hayes who is our captain, lefty attackman had a great day he finished with 2 goals and 6 assists. Justin is currently leading the country in goals. Dave Brock had a great day with 5 goals and 2 assists. Kevin Kemp had another big game for us with 3 goals and 1 assist. Billy Bushell our x attackman had 2 and 1, but controlled the ball behind the net and grabbed 5 ground balls which turned into positive possessions for us. Jake Koch had a huge day in between the lines and on the wing grabbing 12 loose balls and going 3 and 1 on the day. Our face - off guys were challenged all day and played great, but our defense was led by senior goalie Zach Bates.

Senior Justin Hayes, a captain for the men's lacrosse team, was selected for tallying 36 points (21 goals and 15 assists) in only four games. From Hudson, Ohio, Hayes is among the top point leaders in the country in the NJCAA and has collected 31 ground balls. "Justin is one of the best players in the country and will go to one of the top schools in Division I next fall," said lacrosse coach Rich Dommer. Hayes is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society.
Makenzie Sager, Johnstown, is a second year player for the women's lacrosse team. In the team's only game in March, Sager was scored one goal for the Generals. Women's lacrosse coach Dianna Ste-Marie said "Makenzie's shooting skills and attack vision have improved 100% from last year, and I expect many more goals from her this season."
